Ways to Better Manage Time
Time management is something that most people could become better at, whether they are busy college students, business owners, or someone who just wants to dedicate more time to a hobby. Here are a few ways to help become more organized and better manage your time.
Consider Technology
Nearly everyone has a smartphone, with thousands of apps at their disposal to help with everything from productivity and time management to sleep and fitness. Many apps can help with organization and planning the tasks that you have throughout the day. Some apps provide motivation and incentives if you stay off your phone and do something productive for a set amount of time. Although technology can be a huge distraction in today’s world, it can also be incredibly helpful when used correctly.
Learn to Say “No”
Many entrepreneurs and people who run businesses both small and large are social and have very people-oriented personalities. People who want to please others may find it difficult to say “no” when someone asks them to do something. However, it is important to be able to prioritize the tasks that you need to do and only consider doing what others are asking of you after you complete your crucial tasks. Of course, sometimes someone needs something very important or urgent, and that can be handled on a case-by-case basis. But make it a point to establish boundaries and make it known which hours are yours to get your tasks done.
Set Goals
Part of time management includes setting aside time to complete tasks that are not urgent but will benefit you in the long run. Some examples include:
- Taking an online class in a subject that is directly or indirectly related to your business, and possibly earning a certification or degree
- Reaching out to potential customers and expanding your business, even when your business is doing good financially
- Going to conferences to network with other business owners and spread your company’s name
- Learning a new skill that would benefit your business
Tasks that have no deadline or that do not have a sense of urgency can be especially difficult to complete for those who already struggle with time management. Recognize that things such as learning a new skill or set of knowledge will save you time in the long term.
